One of my favorite Dave Ramsey quotes comes from his book, The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness. He says, “We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like.”
People were made for worship, and when material things become an idol in their lives, they often find themselves with a bad case of “stuff-itis.” The phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” addresses the insanity that happens when people feel the need to do or be better or have more than someone else. It’s such a prevalent mindset the phrase spawned a movie by the same title and a television show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” is available on-demand on several platforms.
I have never seen a single episode of the tv hit, but I was fascinated to learn how many viewers it had at its peak: a whopping 2.5 MILLION people!
I was floored to learn so many people are regularly interested in the lives of complete strangers just because they’re beautiful, rich, and famous.
It made me think of what Dave Ramsey would say if he could address that specific crowd of people! I know one thing for sure, he would tell people to stop purchasing on credit just to appear like the Kardashians or any other rich person they admire!
Dave Ramsey is known primarily for his Financial Peace University and the many books he’s written on the topic of finances. He advocates knowing where your money is coming from and to where it is going with the use of a budgeting worksheet.
I am including one on the website for your convenience.
Getting ahead in life financially should be a goal had by everyone, but often people just don’t know where to start to do so. Using a budgeting worksheet is a great tool to begin reigning in spending, commence or increase saving, and to then start thinking about additional ways to increase income and decrease expenses.
