The other day we were driving down the road when a mattress flew off the back of a truck and backed up traffic for five miles on a three-lane highway. I had an epiphany moment when I saw the reason for the congestion and I came to the conclusion that life is a lot like driving. There are all sorts of delays, detours, obstacles, pedestrians, cyclists, and the random mattress that gets in the way and slows down traffic.
Living on an island has some unique challenges. Oahu is 597 square miles of one giant traffic jam. In 2018, there were over 900,000 registered vehicles on this little chunk of rock. Trying to time your commute to avoid said traffic can be quite difficult. The other day, it took us 45 minutes to travel 4.7 miles in one direction on the freeway, but the very next day at the same time of day it only took ten minutes. Crazy!
On the mainland, GPS can help you go around pockets of bad traffic, but on an island it's not as easy to avoid. There are only so many roads available from which to choose!
Walking with God for over three decades, I've realized He does not operate like GPS.
You don't always get to see the congestion on the road up ahead. He might not tell you you're heading for a detour until you've been rerouted. So many times in my life, I have started off heading one way only to find myself going in the completely opposite direction...yet, I still somehow manage to get to the destination I set out for in the first place. It makes no sense, but He makes it work.
It's like God's math. Have you ever noticed 2+2 is not always 4 with God? I mean, take the account of the fish and the loaves, for example. Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish and fed a multitude of 5,000 people. How in the world did THAT math add up???
Right about now, you're probably saying, "Jesus, would you like to multiply the contents of my bank account like that? Please and thank you!" Can I get an 'amen?!'
I have seen God do some creative accounting, interesting navigating, and come up with some crazy solutions for problems I didn't know I had!
Wherever you are at on your journey in life, remember God sees things that are not even on your radar yet and He knows exactly how best to get you to where you're going. Even if it looks like you're going to be stuck where you're at for years and years like a bad Hawaiian traffic jam, He will take you on some secret off-roading trails to get you to your destination right on time!
