Warning: This May Contain the Coronavirus

Updated: Apr 6

Contrary to contemporary thought, the coronavirus strain, COVID-19, did not originate in Wuhan, China. It began in a garden. More specifically, it started in the Garden of Eden.

You see, when Lucifer exalted himself against God (Isaiah 14:12-17), he was cast down to the earth. Genesis 1:2 (KJV) describes his environment as “formless and void.” The Hebrew phrase there is “tohuw” and “bohuw,” which means “a waste desolation, worthless, void, empty, and an indistinguishable ruin.”

Imagine his great surprise when the chaos he lived in on this planet suddenly began to take form, and life sprung up all around him (Genesis 1-2).

I wonder, did he think the Father was speaking and creating beauty for him? Did he think he was about to inherit the kingdom he had envisioned?

Imagine his horror when he saw humankind formed from the dust of the earth, and when he watched the Lord breathe the breath of life and impart His spirit into mankind.

Imagine the rage he felt when he heard God speak, “’Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth’” (Genesis 1:26-28, NKJV).

The very thing he had desired was freely given to a creature designed in the very image and likeness - an exact copy - of God Himself: mankind.

It only makes sense he craftily went after Adam and Eve’s authority to again usurp God, and to attempt again to exalt himself above the King of the Universe.

The only restriction God had given His new creation, Adam and Eve, was not to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Genesis 2:15-17), for they would surely die as a result of eating it. Satan knew they would take on the nature of whomever they served. They would take on his nature of sin if they disobeyed God and obeyed him. Satan tempted Adam and Eve, and they committed high treason against God their Father by obeying and yielding to the enticement of the evil one.

What was the temptation? It was to exalt themselves above God and to establish themselves apart from Him – the very thing Lucifer had been cast out of Heaven for doing.

Genesis 3:1-6:

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

Adam and Eve had been given positions of great honor and leadership in subservience to the Father. When they submitted themselves to the governance of the evil one they surrendered their authority, power, and dominion to him, placing themselves in subservience to him.

They were formed in the image of their Heavenly Father upon creation, but now, under the dominion of a new, merciless ruler, they took on the fallen nature – the image and likeness – of the evil one. As a result, “…the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5).

The death that came into the world from the sin of Adam and Eve is the origin of every disease, every virus, every act of evil, and the conditions of people whose hearts are far from God. And, yes, it is even the origin of the coronavirus.

Through one act of disobedient high treason, mankind had separated himself for eternity from the Presence of the Father. Adam and Eve had attempted to exalt and to establish themselves apart from God the same way Lucifer had, but their story had a different ending: before they ever sinned, God had provided a Savior to redeem them to Himself and to restore them to their former position.

Next week, we will take a look at God’s plan of redemption and salvation – which includes protection even from the corornavirus.
